What Is Identity Work in Therapy?
Identity work in therapy is the process of exploring and understanding the different aspects of who you are—internally and in relation to the world around you. It can be liberating, empowering, and at times, complex or painful. Therapy offers a space to unpack the layers of identity that have been shaped by family, community, oppression, resilience, and personal growth.
Common themes in identity therapy include:
Questioning or affirming gender identity and/or sexual orientation
Navigating racial, cultural, or bicultural identity
Understanding intersectionality and internalized messages
Exploring faith, spirituality, or religious trauma
Unpacking neurodivergence or disability identity
